It's been forever if you can't tell. Lots of changes in Clarkelandia since my last post. Hey, no one reads this anyway. Well if you happen upon this, check out my new project for the last year: Gypsy Caravan, an instrumental gypsy jazz band: www.gypsycaravanband.com We just put out a new CD "Douze Chansons" with 12 original songs. It's available on the website, and at CDBaby, and as mp3 downloads at iTunes and Amazon. You can also find it on last.fm and Spotify, as well as some other online services. Check it out and let me know what you think! David

I am currently in the middle of my first "cleanse." I was inspired by reading Clean, which I highly recommend. In the past I had tried some dieting...mostly eating good whole foods, and fairly rigorous exercise when my back was up to it. I couldn't lose weight and had serious issues with allergies.

The diet is a vegetable or fruit shake for breakfast and dinner, and a sensible meal for lunch. Recipes are in the book. I have cut out caffeine, alcohol, dairy, eggs, wheat, soy, red meat, and nightshade vegetables.

So far on day 11 I have lost 9 lbs and may allergies have reduced greatly. 10 days to go to complete the cleanse.

I have a few issues with some of the Recipes. The meals don't all seem to net the same portions, and a few steps are left out here and there...but common sense allowed me to make the best of it and figure things out.

Gotta love shuffle-play on my iPod once in a while. For today's lunchtime walk I ran across a few songs that I'd forgotten about that were cool:

In reverse order:

1. "No Me Llores Mas" - Marc Ribot from "The Prosthetic Cubano" - classic Cuban groove

2. "First Light" - Frank Gambale, from "The Light Beyond" one of the more 'groovin' songs from Frank. I thought it was Scott Henderson at first...great chord voicings!

3. "Spanish Fly" - Van Halen, from "Van Halen II" - tapping on a classical guitar; so cool!

4. "Memory is a Gimmick" - Aquarium Rescue Unit, from "Mirrors of Embarassment" - The spoken lyrics reminded my of Frank Zappa. Always funky grooves from bassist Oteil Burbridge and drummer Apt Q258

5. "Stone Woman" - Bryan Ferry, from "Boys and Girls" - great slap bass 80's groove! No wonder it is such a hot groove:
David Gilmour - guitar; Omar Hakim - drums (ouch!); possibly Marcus Miller on bass!

6. "Late Show" - Paul Schaeffer the original full song version with (I believe) Hiram Bullock - guitar; Will Lee - Bass; Steve Jordan - drums; and David Sanborn - alto sax.

7. "Stella by Starlight" - Bireli Lagrene from "Standards", burnin' jazz with Andre Ceccarelli - drums, and Neils Henning Orsted Pedersen - bass

Enjoy!

CT Day Three: Wanted a "real" breakfast this am, so went to "Mange Tout" in New London...all organic food...but the fritatta pannini didn't quite cut it...the southwestern wrap that My got was not bad, but not what I wanted. Then as we left, right next door was a diner...bacon, eggs, hashbrowns! Damn! Maybe another day! So we walked around town a bit and checked out the new improved waterfront - not so scary as it was when My used to live here as a kid. $44 each for bikes to Fischer's Island on the ferry, plus $25 for each person! More expensive than taking a car! We opted NOT to go, and went to the Mystic Aquarium. I was a bit disappointed with the quality and quantity, and it was SO busy with kids on vacation! But the Sea Lion show was cool, as was the exhibit with info on Ballard and his discovery/exploration of the Titanic, ships in the Black Sea, and the Volcano on Santorini...maybe due for another explosion in the future!

Then after filling up the car we headed to Old Lyme to meet up with My's relatives and go to a neighbor's house for a cookout (well, we were in the middle of a rainstorm so it was inside) hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, beans, and a can of Fosters Ale I brought with. Good time on the front porch talking to everyone. Finally filled to the brims we headed back to the relatives for a short visit and then back to the hotel.

CT Day Two: In room Continental Breakfast was just fine for this AM, then we met Mylisa's Dad and Stepmom Karen at Mystic Seaport. We spent most of the day exploring the historic buildings, the under-renovation Charles Morgan Whaler, and various Galleries and Video Explanations. We skipped lunch (we did have a Mocha Latte around 3) and hit the S & P Oyster Bar around 5 for drinks and dinner (I had a Broiled Seafood Platter with Oysters, Shrimp and Cod wrapped in Breading with a Lobster Sauce!). We hit the streets of Mystic after and happened upon a great Blues Band in the Park...Dennis Gruenling harmonica player (http://dennisgruenling.com/audio-video#video with a great band. He was great, and the guitarist and saxophonist were spectacular...quite a treat!http://www.myspace.com/gruenling
Then we got dropped off at our car, I hit Kohl's for a new watch, and the liquour store (imagine that) and Mylisa gave me a tour of Groton and some of the seaside environs...back to the hotel at 10!

Groton, Old Lyme, Mystic Day One: Yesterday after driving all night and arriving in Old Lyme, CT at 7 am, visit a waking family, tour Essex, have a drink at the Griswold Inn, circa 1776, eat lunch (Fried Cod Sandwich w/Aioli and fries) at the Crows Nest at the Boatyard, then to the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme. We had both only slept one hour, so we checked in to our hotel, took a 2 hr. power nap, then off to Mystic for a little sightseeing, dinner at the Daniel Packer Inn... (Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer w/ spicy thai cucumber pickles, a side of baguette w/roasted garlic bulb and a Pear Salad on frisee lettuce and asiago cheese, with a local brew, the Mystic IPA). A good walk over the bridge and around town at night, then back to crash around midnight. Off to Mystic today for Seaport and Museum stuff...
