This week's MI5:
1. If you could start over from scratch, what instrument would you play?
I love the violin. I can play it now like a second year beginner (which is better than nothing) but I wish I could play it really well. Well enough to perform professionally with; and improvise. I've always wanted to play tenor sax also...will get one someday. All that being said, I still choose the guitar.
2. With your current instrument, what would you change about the way you learned it?
MORE HOURS WOODSHEDDING! I want effortless technique. Not just to be fast, but to have the ability to play what I want, when I hear it. I started fairly young, but needed more intense technique practice.
3. Why did you pick your current instrument?
My dad played, and I got a ukelele as a 3 year old, so it just seemed like the way to go. In 5th grade band no guitar was available, and I wanted to play, sax was too expensive to rent, so I played clarinet. I could start playing guitar in band in 8th grade in private school, and that's when I really started playing it seriously.
4. If you could, would you change how much time you devote to music, i.e. choosing it as your main career? If so, where would you live? Or like to live?
I still sometimes wonder if I could have stuck it out in the service band, and retired at 37!!
Or I would have liked to go on tour with some band. But I pretty much like what I am doing now. I would like to be able to play a bit more often, for a bit more money. I'm working on the Maui connection right now. I'm thinking Jan 1st to June 1st in Maui is about right, playing music there and maybe still doing some computer work; summers here.
5. What would be your dream instrument purchase?
a. D'Angelico New Yorker
D'Angelico Excel
b. Gibson Super 400
c. Gibson Johnny Smith
d. Fender D'Aquisto Elite
e. Dana Bourgeois
I could go on, but why bother??
